I’m prone to breakouts. I also exercise often. These two things do not seem to work together in my favor. If sweat sits on my skin after a workout for even a few minutes, I know there’s going to be a problem. When I realized that the new gym I’m about to join is a 30-minute commute every day, I knew I needed to come up with a solution. Of course showering at the gym is always an option, but I’ll never turn down an opportunity to create a face mist!
To me, this face mist seems to be the perfect storm of ingredients. Tea tree oil kills bacteria before it has a chance to cause a blemish, sea salt helps treat existing blemishes while its minerals nourish the skin, peppermint cools the skin after a heated workout, and lemongrass lifts the mood as lavender calms the mind.
To make, first brew a cup of peppermint tea. While it’s still hot, add in your sea salt and mix well to dissolve. Then, mix in your tea tree oil and essential oils, and allow to cool. Funnel your mixture into an atomizer bottle (glass is best), and you’re good to go!
A couple of tips!
– If your skin is sensitive, you might want to start out using a little less tea tree oil and sea salt, and maybe just 1 or 2 drops of the essential oils in total. These oils can be irritating to some, so it’s best to start with a diluted version.
– Not all sea salt is created equal. Oftentimes, sea salt that appears bright white in color has been processed, which means it’s not as pure and natural as it may seem. I love pink Himalayan sea salt – I get mine from Whole Foods.
– This spray can be used on your body as well. If you’re prone to breakouts on your back after exercise, this might help!
– Feel free to experiment with different types of herbal tea and various essential oils, too. Just make sure you don’t use any that are too harsh on your skin.
